Reagan Bowerman and Andrew Cain will represent Munising wrestling at the 2023 MHSAA Individual State Championships, held at Ford Field on March 3-4. The pair both finished in the top four of their weight class at the Charlevoix regional on Saturday, Feb. 18. Andrew Cain lost his first match in the 126-pound division, but won his next two to qualify in the final spot from the 126 pound division. The Mustang pinned his next two opponents to get into the third place match, but lost to Jericho Holmes of Pine River.
Bowerman is returning to Ford Field after finishing second to Iron Mountain’s Evan Hafekorn in the 150 pound division. Hafekorn and Bowerman finished first and second in the district tournament as well, as both wrestlers easily won their quarterfinal and semifinal matchups.
Wyatt Kulik, a Superior Central student participating in the co-op with Munising, also wrestled at regionals. He failed to qualify after losing his first two matches.
Altogether 28 U.P. wrestlers qualified individually for the state tournament, with 19 coming from Division 4. Bark River-Harris and Iron Mountain both advanced the most wrestlers for the tournament. Gladstone and Iron Mountain both made the state team tournaments, held this weekend, in their respective divisions.
