East Channel Brewing Company revives the regular Science on Tap series with a talk tonight about managing state forests. Michigan Department of Natural Resources scientists and foresters will provide detailed discussion about how the government reviews and maintains various state forests, including those in Alger County. The discussion starts at 6 p.m. in the upstairs area of the microbrewery.

Mother’s Day Sunday

An annual and friendly reminder that Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 14. This is a great time to celebrate mothers or to support those who may have lost a child or a parent recently. A number of smaller events and church services are scheduled throughout the Central U.P. in honor of the holiday.

SC band concert Thursday The spring band concert for Superior Central will be held at the SC gymnasium on Thursday, May 18. The event will showcase the Cougars’ band program and will provide the crowd with a number of unique songs, including one dedicated to student Neo John Paul Wilson, who passed away last summer.

COA hosts spring noodle hockey Thursday The popular seniors’ event noodle hockey will be at the Trenary Community Center on Thursday, May 18. Noodle hockey is a sport where people sit with pool noodles and try to direct a ball down the line into the opposing goal. Play starts at noon. Project Fresh coupons will also be available for qualifying seniors.

Panic over Bay College emergency
test

Delta County Central Dispatch said that the group was “inundated” with calls about an alleged threat at Bay College on Tuesday, May 9. There was no threat, but it was a test of the campus’s emergency response notification system, as clarified by Bay College officials and local law enforcement.

Final Finlandia class graduates A number of local colleges had their graduation ceremonies last Saturday, May 6, including Finlandia University in Hancock. With the closure of the university announced earlier in the fall, it was the final graduation ceremony for the U.P.’s only private university. Less than 100 graduates received their diplomas at the ceremony.
