The Village of Chatham is working on numerous improvement projects after action at the village’s regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 10.
Chatham has struggled with potholes on Munising Avenue for months as unusual frost patterns and snowmobile traffic have furthered existing problems with the road. Some of the potholes were over seven inches below the pavement and more than a yard in diameter. The board voted to approve improvement efforts unanimously.
Additional gravel will be added to the alley in between Rock River and Gladstone Streets to help with the stability of that path.
Chatham also approved a bid for new flooring at the village offices, which is part of a larger improvement process for the village. A dumpster was also approved for the municipal government to clean out the village garage. The board approved other painting projects at previous meetings.
The majority of the meeting was spent discussing unpaid payroll checks from the last three months regarding the village’s water billing protocols and procedures. Kristi Taskey is now operating the water billing system. She told the board that she ran into transitional issues regarding printing procedures and document organization that increased the amount of time required to complete the workload.
Taskey was not able to attend the April meeting, so payroll had backed up for the initial month in question (February), the month when Taskey missed (March) and payroll that needed to be approved through the normal approval process (April). Janet Whitmarsh asked a series of questions regarding the water billing and if there was maybe a different way to review the position based on employee turnover, but the payroll was approved unanimously after the due diligence by the elected officials.
