Starting tonight, three Alger County high schools will have their graduation ceremonies this weekend. Superior Central starts tonight at 7 p.m. at the school gymnasium and Munising will be Saturday at noon at Mustang Stadium. Munising Baptist will be Sunday, May 28 at 3 p.m. at the church. Burt Township does not have a 2023 graduating class.

Memorial Day services held throughout Alger A number of services will be held at cemeteries and memorials across Alger County in remembrance of Memorial Day. A full list of ceremonies was not available at this week’s deadlines, but the Munising American Legion post is expected to provide on before Monday. The Beacon will update social media as times and locations are confirmed.

Second food co-op store meeting set After public response and schedule concerns, a second interest meeting about establishing a grocery store cooperative in downtown Munising will take place at Alger Parks and Rec on Thursday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m.. The event will have a small presentation followed by focus testing about what a co-op would look like to be both successful and provide community needs. Information from both focus groups will be compiled and released sometime in June.

Section 8 voucher list open The Munising Housing Authority announced that the Section 8 housing assistance program is open for applications with apartments available in June. Section 8 housing vouchers allows seniors and low-income families the ability to pay portions of their rent in approved rentals. Landlords and renters in the area can also apply for existing rentals. Trenary announces Independence plans The Trenary Lions Club announced that the annual Independence Day Celebration will be held on Saturday, July 1, starting at 1 p.m. with the parade. Races, games and more will follow at the Lions Club park. Trenary has seen an increase in participants and activities when celebrations are on the weekend closest to the Fourth instead of overlapping on celebrations in other locations on the holiday itself.

No new blastomycosis cases

Public Health Delta & Menominee Counties said there have been no additional cases of blastomycosis reported to its department since May 12. The fungal disease has hospitalized 13 with one death after an outbreak at the Billerud Paper Mill in Escanaba. Further monitoring is expected as the mill already resumed operations.
