Fourth of July activities this weekend
A number of celebrations for Independence Day will take place through Tuesday, July 4. Things start in Trenary with a parade starting at 1 p.m. and celebrations after. Grand Marais is hosting a two-day event on Monday and Tuesday, but the fireworks show will be on July 3. The Munising festivities will be just on Tuesday.
LMAS warns about air quality
The LMAS Health Department is asking people to be aware of increased poor air quality in the area due to wildfires. According to LMAS, poor air quality is risky for all demographics, but specifically young children and those with asthma or other lung conditions. Also those 65 and over are at a greater risk of heart attack or cardiovascular events when air quality is low. Air Quality Index is available at AirNow.gov.
Chatham fundraiser meets goal
The Chatham Little League announced the raffle winners from its scoreboard fundraiser last Sunday at the Chatham Lions Club pancake breakfast. Jessica Maki took home the top prize of the 20 payouts, but more importantly, the Little League raised over $10,000 to build a new scoreboard for the field at the Alger County Fairgrounds.
City Hall exterior maintenance
The City of Munising approved a $13,453.25 maintenance cost to keep the exterior of the log house-style city hall up to standards at its regular meeting on Monday, June 26. The exterior needs preventative maintenance every other year or once every three years. The maintenance may happen as soon as today.
Increased black bear sightings
Reports are showing an increased in security camera videos of black bears in the Grand Marais area and Western Alger County near M 94. According to the Humane Society of the United States, homeowners can deter black bears by having clean and covered barbecue and compost areas, bringing in garbage cans at night and moving bird feeders to inaccessible places.
Michigan top five for investment property interest
Real estate group Malibu announced that Michigan is ranked fifth in real estate investment Google searches. The most popular search dealt with house foreclosures, which are being targeted by out-of-area investors to put in short term rentals and locals looking to buy their first property. Wisconsin was ranked first in the study.
