Aho, Hermann await ACRC appointment decision

The goal of finding a new Alger County Road Commissioner has reached the Alger County Commission. Letters of interest from Roy Aho of Trenary and John Hermann of Munising were received by the Alger County Commission on Monday, July 10.

A decision will be made next week at the Monday, July 17 meeting, according to County Commission Chair Dean Seaberg.

“I think (Hermann) is someone who can step right in, who’s been there before. Roy has also asked to be considered for the open seat,” Seaberg said. “Next week we’ll make a vote on that.”

Both bring a resume with previous government experience. Aho is the former Mathias Township Supervisor and dealt with various infrastructure related projects. Hermann serves on the City of Munising Planning Commission. Hermann also served on the ACRC before for 12 years, but lost in the Republican primary to Pete Heyrman last August.

The seat was vacated after the death of Jack Hubbard, who was chair at the time of his passing. According to multiple sources and public statements, the county reserved the right to appoint someone to the ACRC until the county commission replaced retiring county commissioner Esley Mattson last month. This is the first Committee of the Whole since D. Michael Nettleton was appointed to the board.

Additional discussion was held regarding teleconferencing equipment that would record county government meetings for broadcasting across the internet. It was approved to bring in one of the cameras to see how it would operate given the room layout and audio capabilities.

“This is something that I think is going to make a lot of people happy,” said Commissioner Kelly Livermore.

The county also authorized to hire an extra sheriff’s deputy to assist with school resource officers at Superior Central, AuTrain-Onota and Burt Township schools. The City of Munising Police Department had previously entered an agreement to supply the school resource officer for Munising schools.
