Carle named new NFS Chief Ranger

Hiawatha National Forest’s Supervisor, Shannon Rische, has announced the selection of Nate Carle as the District Ranger for the Munising Ranger District in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

“We are so happy to welcome Nate to this important leadership position in the Hiawatha’s West Zone,” Rische said.

“With his vast and varied experience, he will be well-equipped to support the many projects on this busy District and will add a fresh perspective to our Forest Leadership Team.”

“I’m looking forward to gaining knowledge and perspective by working for a different federal agency while continuing to serve the American public and support conservation goals,” said Carle.

Carle follows in the footsteps of former District Ranger, Charlie Marsh, who retired from the U.S.

Forest Service in March 2023.

Carle comes to the U.S. Forest Service from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. His last duty station was at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Cambridge, MD. Nate has over sixteen years of natural resources land management experience on federal lands. He was a biological technician for various nongovernmental organizations and universities, as well as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Michigan, prior to becoming a wildlife biologist in Maryland.

Nate is a Michigan native and is a graduate of the biology program at Central Michigan University. In his free time, Nate and his family enjoy hunting, fishing, birding, hiking, flying, mushroom hunting, canoeing, reading, woodworking, and home remodeling projects.

Carle will assume his new duties on August 14, 2023.
