100 Years Ago – The Munising News – Sept. 14, 1923 Interest is shown in new highway
Much interest is shown here in the agitation for a new road along the right of way of the South Shore to connect with the Onota township highway at Sand River, and the petitions recommending the matter to the attention of the county highway commission will be largely signed.
The project was urged on the attention of the county commission last year, and, it is said, the budge contained an item for a preliminary survey, but nothing was done.
75 Years Ago – The Munising News – Sept. 9, 1948 Sawmill under construction
in Wetmore
Construction of a sawmill in Wetmore has been started by the H&S Timber Products company, and that project may be completed and the mill in operation this Fall.
Charles Hebert and Jay Spielmacher, both of Munising, are operating the business. The sawmill will measure approximately 30 by 60 feet. Present plans of the firm are to cut lumber. Later operations will be expanded and another larger building will be erected for a crate and box mill.
50 Years Ago – Grand Marais Pilot & Pictured Rocks Review – Sept. 12, 1973 Forest fire burns 37 acres near Grand Marais
Approximately 37 acres of jackpine slashings were burned in a forest fire east of Grand Marais on Saturday, Sept. 8. Although the fire was contained before it consumed standing timber, several large piles of cut pulpwood were destroyed. The forest fire is believed to be the result of a grudge fight between two lumberjacks.
25 Years Ago – The Munising News – Sept. 16, 1998 Recall petitions name mayor & commissioner
Recall petition documents, naming Mayor Carol Gatiss and Commissioner Louis Miron, were filed last week with the Alger County Clerk’s office by members of Local 1446. Union Local 1446 membership is comprised of the 18 city wastewater treatment plant, department of public works and fire department personnel. The petition wording, states “On June 15, 1998 the above named city commissioner voted in favor of entering an agreement with Earth Tech, a private company, for the supervision of the Waste Water Treatment Plant, in violation of the City Charter”.
10 Years Ago – The Munising News – Sept. 18, 2023 Classic car cruise and show coming to town by Amanda Ingraham
After many years of hearing the possibilities of hosting a classic car show, the area will finally experience one of its own this coming weekend.
Members of what is now the non-profit group “Munising Bay Cruisers” had known of talk about hosting a car show in the Munising area for at least then years, but that no one had the time to make it happen. The group got together to discuss in January, and as a result, have been working on the project ever since.
