100 years ago – The Munising News October 5, 1923 Walsworth resigns as superintendent Just prior to the adjournment of a special meeting of the Board of Education held Monday evening, A. M. Walsworth, superintendent of schools, tendered his resignation, the same to take immediate effect.
After some discussion during which it was bought out that Mr. Walsorth would continue as head of the schools provided the board would engage him for 1924-25, the resignation was formally accepted by a vote of three to one.
While Mr. Walsworth’s action came somewhat as a surprise in view of the fact that his relations with the board had been cordial following the opening of schools, it had been predicted that he might step out after getting the schools opened and under way.
75 years ago – The Munising News October 7, 1948 New X-ray unit now operating A 200 milliamp x-ray unit has been installed in the Munising hospital through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
The new unit, which places the hospital in position to handle most forms of x-ray cases, is now in operation.
The foundation has also arranged for the use here of its radiologist and pahtologist, who are located in Marquette. These technicians are available to the Munising hospital on call.
50 years ago – The Munising News – Oct. 3, 1973 Eden Lutheran Church Dedication scheduled The formal dedication of the new Eden Lutheran Church in Munising on Munising Bay, will begin with a dedication banquet to be held on Saturday evening.
“In God’s Name Go Forth” has been chosen by the dedication committee as the theme for the dedication of the new $375,000 edifice. E.V. “Al” Johnson, a former Eden member, now residing in Neenah, Wis., will be the keynote speaker for the event. Mr. Johnson is presently vice president of the international division of Kimberly-Clark Corp.
20 Years Ago – The Munising News -Wed. Oct. 8, 2003 H-58 and H-13 will stay open In a meeting with law enforcement agencies, snowmobile organizations and business concerns last week, the Alger County Road Commission announced that H-58 and H-13 will remain open to snowmobile traffic this winter.
The road commission had been considering the possibility of possibly closing both roads due to concerns voiced by road commission snowplow drivers and citizen complaints. The public hearing was attended by approximately 150 concerned citizens who were overwhelmingly in favor of keeping the roads open.
10 Years Ago – The Munising News Wed. Oct. 2, 2013 U.S. government shutdown sidelines Lakeshore, Forest personnel – Amanda Ingraham Several area residents have been temporarily laid off while the U.S. legislative branch continues to disagree on a governmental spending bill.
Because of the impasse, only a skeleton crew of personnel necessary for maintaining safety or essential services will continue to report to work. Locally, only a handful of federal law enforcement personnel will be on duty, while the remainder of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Hiawatha National Forest employees will experience a furlough.
