The Get Away Drop In will reopen on Tuesday, Oct. 31 after being closed for roughly six months. Informally known as “The Drop In”, the center has been without a director since April of this year. Without a director, The Drop In was unable to open and serve the community.
The organization’s board of directors approved the hiring of Amanda Storm as the new director on October 18.
“It is important for The Drop In to reopen, because it allows people to interact with others whom have similar experiences,” Storm said. “While I am honored to have been chosen to be the new Director of The Drop In, the work is really done by its members and their perseverance to keep The Drop In open has to be noted. Having daily struggles with mental illness myself, I am very excited that The Drop In will reopen and that I am able to be a part of it.”
According to the center’s mission statement, The Drop In provides an atmosphere of acceptance. Where individuals feel needed and grow in self-worth, dignity, and self-respect. This is achieved through social and recreational activities, peer support, and community resources. Most importantly The Drop In assists in promoting self-advocacy.
A Halloween Open House will be scheduled on Tuesday, October 31 from 3-5 p.m.. There will be light snacks, crafts and coloring, and candy. A party for those that filled out the membership form will be available after. Candy will also be available for trick-or-treaters for the holiday.
