Brumm, Mason to run for 109

Margaret Brumm of Marquette announced that she will be running for the Michigan House of Representatives seat 109 in the 2024 election. She will be challenging incumbent Jenn Hill in the Democratic primary.

A former patent attorney, Brumm currently sits on the publicly-elected Marquette Board of Light and Power. She has also run multiple times for the Marquette City Commission, including finishing fourth of five eligible candidates in the November election.

Despite hosting a campaign kickoff event on Monday, Nov. 20, Brumm did not notify members of the press outside of Marquette. According to WZMQ CBS19, Brumm is focusing on renewable energy, small businesses and U.P. autonomy.

“I believe our current representative will continue to put the interests of Lansing ahead of the needs of the Upper Peninsula and will continue to give away local rule in favor of state rule,” Brumm told WZMQ. On the Republican side, Burt Mason will be running for the 109. Currently residing in L’Anse, Mason is a former businessman specializing in sales and product management. He chairs the Friends of the Huron Mountains and the Huron Island Lighthouse Preservation Association and serves on the Baraga County Chamber of Commerce and Baraga County Memorial Hospital boards.

“My mission is to bring positive change to our community while keeping the UP wild and free. I am an avid outdoorsman and a constitution conservative and believe that God will guide me through a successful campaign,” he wrote on his campaign website.

Mason also failed to let Alger County voters know of his election announcement on Nov. 10.
