100 Years Ago – The Munising News – Nov. 23, 1923 State Ferry Makes Good The wisdom of the action by the state legislature providing an auto ferry across the Straits of Mackinac from Mackinaw City to St. Ignace is eloquently demonstrated in the report compiled by Chief Accountant A. C. Parker. The reports shows total receipts of $26,949 ($484,878.70 in today’s value) since the ferry started the first of August.
Total operating expenses were $15,807.59 ($284,417.37 today’s value).
75 Years Ago – Orange & Black – Nov. 23, 1948 Sophomores lead in Junior Red Cross donations On Nov.15, Mather students finished another drive for Junior Red Cross Contributions.
The amount collected from Mather High was $23.43. To the sophomores go the credit for contributing approximately one-half of all the money turned in by the home rooms.
Grade schools in Munising township contributed a total of $36.86, of which Mather Elementary contributed $13.13.
50 Years Ago – The Munising News – Nov. 21, 1973 Conflict in meets causes city hall stir There was a conflict in meetings schedled for Monday night of this week and it resulted in some added friction among members of the Munising City Commission. It was the night fro the regular monthly meeting of the city commission. Munising school officials were also holding a special “brainstorming session” in an attempt to determine causes for the recent defeat in the $4 million school bond issue election and to try to decide on a course of action to take in resubmitting a school facilities improvement proposal to school district voters again later.
25 Years Ago – The Munising News – Nov. 25, 1998 Hiawatha Log Homes win log home design Hiawatha Log Homes was presented the “1998 House Beautiful Home Building Design Competition Award” for the most outstanding Log Home Design entry. Hiawatha Log Homes is a member of the National Association of Home Builders, Log Homes Council and was presented the award at the NAHB annual showcase in Asheville, North Carolina on Nov. 15-17.
A panel of judges comprised of House Beautiful’s editorial staff, representing several of their home building and decorating publications, evaluated a record number of entries in this year’s contest.
10 Years Ago – The Munising News Nov. 27, 2013 Sunset over Lake Superior named winning Pure Michigan moment Pure Michigan announced on Tuesday, Nov. 19 that Carla White of Christmas is the winner of the Michigan Moments Photo Contest. White’s winning photograph features a sunset over Lake Superior, just west of Bay Furnace Park in Christmas. The photo will be featured in the 2014 Pure Michigan Travel Guide this spring.
