The Munising City Commission met Monday evening in a public forum.

The meeting opened with a report given by Kathy Reynolds in regards to the various DDA projects which have been active in the past months. She began by thanking the individuals who made Rekindle the Spirit possible and followed by reporting on how this program did with more than $9,000 in prizes handed out to 70 winners. This represented almost $200,000 in receipts turned in by individuals who shopped at businesses in Alger County over the past few week, which brings the total amount spent in Alger County up to nearly $2.5 million since this program began 12 years ago.

The commission then discussed the application for federal financial assistance with the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Rural Utilities Service for use on the Washington Street Project.

“This will be a great project for that end of town. It’s needed,” Mayor Nettleton said, as he opened the discussion on this project.

Washington street has some of the last of the old clay sewer lines buried an impressive 16 feet deep in some areas. The update will raise that to 8 feet. In addition to surface street upgrades, the project will then install modern piping for sewer and water. This is expected to affect Washington Street from the H58 interchange to the hospital.

The assistance will be added to monies collected from the federal government received last year. Bids will be taken in late 2024 for this project with construction expected to begin in 2025.

The meeting voted on two expenditures connected to the Washington Street Project and the meeting adjourned.

The next City Commission meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. on January 3rd, 2024.

On the 2nd we were paged out for mutual aid for Munising Twp for a structure fire.

On the 4th we were paged out for a lawn mower fire at the Historical Society.

On The 7th we were paged out to Bullivant St for a vehicle fire.

On the 20th we were paged out to set up a LZ at MMH There were no inspections for the month.
