105 Years Ago – The Munising News – December 20th, 1918 Ban is Modified – Churches Open At a meeting of the city board of health, City Health Officer Scholtes offered the following modifications to the present flu ban regulations. Re-opening of soft drink stands, same to be restricted to five people at any one time. Re-opening of the pool rooms – restricted to two people to each table when games are in progress. The ban remains on public and social gatherings of every nature, except churches until further notice. The schools and theater will undoubtedly open January 1st.
75 Years Ago – The Munising News – Dec. 23th, 1948 Munising To Be Regular Port of Call For “South American” In a letter to Mayo Elson Carberry this week, E. J. Geobel, executive vice-president of the Chicago, Duluth and Georgian Bay Transit Company wrote, “It is with pleasure that I am able to inform you that…it was decided to include Munising as a port of call on the regular week’s schedule of our S. S. South American. Accordingly it is now planned that the S. S. South American will stop at Munising each Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 11:00, EST, from June 28 to July 26, inclusive. During the month of August we will not be able to call at Munising in order to avoid passing through the Keewanee Waterway in darkness.”
50 Years Ago – The Munising News – Dec.
19th, 1973 Yule Lights on City Streets Will Be On The ornamental Christmas decoration lighting in Munising’s business district will be switched back on either tonight or tomorrow night, December 20th, and the streets will remain lighted in Christmas splendor through Jan. 1, as the result of action taken at the regular City Commission meeting Monday night. This rescinds the earlier action of the commissioners on Dec. 5th in which they voted to support the city manager’s recommendation that the lights not be turned on as a part of an all-out energy and fuel saving effort by the city.
25 Years Ago – The Munising News – December 23th, 1998 Christmas Light Shines Again Thanks to a project sponsored by the Munising Bay Boat club, the Rear Range Light (known as Dee’s Light, Bay Furnace Light, or the Christmas Light) now shines brightly with holiday cheer.
10 Years Ago – The Munising News – December 25th, 2013 Munising Boys Dominate Manistique, Newberry The Munising boys’ basketball team has come out making a statement, handily taking down two opponents last week at home. On Monday, December 16th, the Mustands hosted the Manistique Emeralds in a game that was rescheduled from its original date of January 7. A few weeks may not have made much of a difference in the outcome, however, as the Mustangs trampled Manistique, 59-22.
