Two months into the Free Store program over at Eden Lutheran Church, several volunteers are working hard to provide a valuable service to those in need. Their first day open was November 16th when they helped a total of fourteen families. According to organizer Jennifer Wood, they matched that number within the first hour of opening on December 21st, showing that there is indeed a need for this kind of assistance, especially through the holiday season.
Who’s eligible? Anyone who is struggling is welcome to show up. While there are no income requirements, those requesting help will be asked to provide information about family size and financial data about their households. This information will be used to help the program apply for grants which will help offset the cost of the project.
The Free Store provides items which food pantries typically do not, including a variety of household goods and non-edible supplies. These include things like: Cleaners (dish soap, laundry detergent, scrubbing sponges, dryer sheets, etc.)
Paper Products (toilet paper, adult diapers, flushable wipes, cotton balls, etc.)
Hygiene Products (hand sanitizer, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, tampons, etc.)
Baby Products (diapers, wipes, etc.)
The top items requested? Toilet paper, conditioner, and liquid hand soap.
These are items which have been provided through donations, as well as items purchased with money given through cash gifts from members of the community.
How can you help the Free Store most? While donations of all kinds are always appreciated, the best way to support the Free Store is through monetary donations which can be used to buy items in bulk to restock the shelves of the store. If you’re interested in helping out, please call the church office at (906) 387-2520.
The Free Store will be open next on THURSDAY, January 18, 2024 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m..
