125 Years Ago – The Munising Republican – December 31, 1898 Hill Bros. Purchase 320 Acre Tract of Mixed Timber Hill Bros., the Chatham road and logging contractors, have purchased a timber track of 320 acres in the Perch Lake District, a short distance south of the city, and are now busy building camps and moving logging equipment to the scene of operations. They will take out hard and soft wood logs, which will come to Munising plants, as well as ties, pulp and kiln wood.
100 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 4, 1924 Who Robbed the Basement Bank?
Sometime last August, according to the testimony of Mrs. Theodore Jerry, she was induced by her brother- in-law Charles Jerry to plant bills beneath the basement floor of her home for safe keeping. When Mrs. Jerry needed funds to meet certain obligations the day after Christmas, she was dismayed to find someone had robbed the bank – fruit can and all. The matter was thoroughly investigated, and Mr. Jerry was given until Saturday noon to refund the full amount.
80 Years Ago – The Munising News – Dec. 31th, 1943 Camp Evelyn Survey Asked Installation of a heavy transformer to handle an electric current supply into Camp Evelyn, former Civilian Conservation Corps camp eight miles east of here, where 300 German war prisoners for work in logging operations may be housed, was ordered today by federal government representatives. George Depew, superintendent of the Alger county road commission stated he had no further information regarding the contingent of prisoners reported to be assigned to Camp Evelyn. He stated also that a survey of Camp Au Train had been ordered that a group of prisoners might also be quartered at this camp located about ten miles west of here.

A regional plan for environmental policies and guidelines for the greater Lake Superior area is in progress. Preliminary findings on legislation and shoreline development of Michigan’s Great Lakes and inland lakes and streams have now been completed by Dr. William H. Baugh. His 40 page preliminary report indicates extensive drawing up of new country and township zoning ordinances in the U.P..
25 Years Ago – The Munising News – December 30, 1998 Recall Election February 1, 1999 Registration for the Special Recall Election, which is set for February 1, 1999 in the City of Munising, has been announced. The special election is scheduled to determine if Mayor (Commissioner) Carol Gatiss and Commissioner Louis Miron should be recalled or not.
10 Years Ago – The Munising News – December 25th, 2013 Schools to Carry Epinephrine Injectors to Help Students Gov. Rick Snyder on December 18, 2013, signed legislation to help protect Michigan children suffering from dangerous and life-threatening food allergies by making sure schools carry epinephrine injectors.
