125 Years Ago – The Munising Republican – January 7, 1899 Female Employees Discharged On Jan. 1, the women clerks and stenographers employed by the Chicago & Northwestern railroad in all its general offices were discharged, except in cases where long service made retention a matter of justice and necessity. The change was general, covering all branches of the system and men are now employed exclusively in its business departments.
100 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 4, 1924 Last Stand of Pine Guarded – Owners give zealous care to oasis in midst of desolation The eighty Acre Tract contains 2,500,000 feet of Michigan cork pine. This last stand of virgin white pine is in the northern part of the lower Michigan peninsula near Grayling. The white pine ranges in diameter from 12 to 36 inches and in height from 100 to 125 feet and is worth about $1,000 an acre.
75 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 6, 1949 Drunks Top Police Report in ‘48; 764 Meter Violators
Munising police were involved in 2,809 actions during the year which began Jan. 1, 1948, and which ended last Friday midnight. Chief Urban Trombly’s annual report, presented to the city commission Monday, showed that for another year “drunk and disorderly” arrests topped the pickup column. Sixty-eight persons were convicted on that count. The report also revealed that 764 drivers were ticketed for violating parking meter regulations.
50 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 3, 1974 New Commander for State Police Here A change in command at the Munising State Police Post, effective immediately, was announced during the past week by Col. John R. Plants, director of the Michigan State Police Dept. in Lansing. Detective Sgt. Arnold R. Johnson of Lansing has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant and named the new commander of the Munising Post.
25 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 6, 1999 County Approves Budget for 1999
The Alger County Board of Commissioners set a new precedent while approving their 1998 and 1999 budgets. The good news: the county had received $72,517 more than the projected revenues for the year. The bad news: County Clerk Don Kinnunen reported the expenditures were $188,307 more than projected. To correct the shortfall, the board approved transferring $115,790 from the DTR to balance the 1998 budget.
