Driving in the Upper Peninsula in the winter months doesn’t have to be daunting. The key lies in being prepared, especially if road conditions are less than perfect.
What do you need in your car at all times?
The Michigan State Police makes these recommendations for your Auto Emergency Kit:
• Jumper cables
• Flares
• Reflective triangle
• Flashlight with extra batteries
• First aid kit (remember extras of your meds)
• Food – Nonperishable items are best, especially items rich in protein such as energy bars or nuts
• Can Opener (if you have canned food in the car)
• Drinking water (enough for all occupants)
• Basic Toolkit – especially pliers, wrench, and screwdriver
• Radio: battery or hand cranked
• Cat Litter or Sand for traction
• Shovel
• Ice Scraper
• Warm Clothes with extras of cold weather gear such as gloves and hats
• Blankets or sleeping bags
• ‘Help’ sign
• Extra items for babies (such as formular, diapers, etc.)
• Extra items for pets (pet food, water bowl, etc.)
