125 Years Ago – The Munising Republican – January 14, 1899

Of Local Interest A.D. Wood editor of the Grand Marais Herald was in town the first of the week as a delegate of the Grand Marais Woodmen. Jas. G. Giuson was the delegate from the home lodge. They shook dice for the election of a county delegate to the state convention and Mr. Wood won. Grand Marais will send Wm. Leighton to represent Alger County.

100 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 4, 1924

Parent-Teachers Meeting Next Monday Evening at Mather High School Auditorium The January meeting of the Parent-Teachers Association will be held Monday evening in the assembly room of the Mather High School. During the meeting the question of purchasing a moving picture machine for the school will be taken up, the advisability of so doing and the matter of raising funds for the purchasing the same will be open for discussion. The object in securing a picture machine for the school is that the children may have the privilege of seeing the best in pictures at a minimum cost.

80 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 14, 1944 Expect War Prisoners at Evelyn Soon About 400 German war prisoners captures in the African campaign, many of them members of Rommel’s Afrika Korps, are expected to arrive in the Upper Peninsula this week for employment in the woods work at Camp Evelyn near Wetmore in Alger county, and Camp Sidnaw near Sidnaw in Houghton county. They are being sent here to help relieve the critical labor shortage in the woods industry.

50 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 9, 1974

Ski Jumping Tourney Held in Munising Sun.

The 31st annual Junior Ski Jumping Tournament was held at the Munising Athletic Field on Sunday, with a good turnout of jumpers in competition and a fairly good sized crowd out to witness the event. Weather conditions for this year’s event were described as “perfect.”

25 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 6, 1999 MADD comes to the U.P.

For the first time since the establishment of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) in Michigan, a Regional Victim Assistance Coordinator will be located in the Upper Peninsula. The coordinator is available to provide assistance to victims of any drunk driving crash.

10 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 15, 2014 Munising native and former Lt. Governor Connie Berube Binsfeld passes away at 89 A former Lieutenant Governor of Michigan, distinguished Munising native Constance “Connie” (Berube) Binsfeld, has passed away at the age of 89. “Connie Binsfeld left an indelible mark on the state she loved. She served with modesty and integrity, always putting Michigan first,” stated current Governor Rick Snyder. “She was a caring person who often became the voice of the defenseless. Her advocacy on behalf of Michigan children, women, and families resulted in landmark laws, including domestic violence legislation that was among the nation’s strongest.”
