The Alger County Board of Commissioners met on January 15, 2024. Among the topics discussed were the approval of 18 items relating to expenditures and appointments. This included: paying for UP911 services, ambulance repair, the recycling contract (1 year), first responders, DHHS, the cancellation of Spectrum as a backup internet provider, and other topics already covered in previous meetings. All 18 items were unanimously approved.
Minutes of the previous meetings were approved. This included the December 11th meeting of the Committee of the Whole, the December 18th Public Hearing for the Proposed FY24 General Fund and other Fund Budgets, the December 11th Public Hearing for the Proposed 5-year Alger County Recreation Plan, and the December 18th Board of Commissioners meeting were all approved.
A discussion concerning general pest control for the Sheriff’s Office, Courthouse, Ambulance Bay, and jail were next on the agenda. After examining the four bids received for this project, the board voted to accept the contract from Lady Killers Pest Management.
Next up was the money soon to become available for much needed repairs to the jail. This has been in process for the last two years, with the result that initial bids received are from companies no longer available to do the work. Given this difficulty and the time which has passed since receiving these bids, they are again attempting to solicit bids before selecting a contractor.
The “old part” of the jail, built in 1964, has been in dire need of repair for many years. Repairs will begin on the plumbing within the cells with work to commence one cell at a time as soon as a bid is accepted.
A proposal to approve the 5-year Alger County Recreational Plan was tabled for later discussions.
A meeting with the Health Department was scheduled to discuss the availability of services and times/days the department is available. Some commentary was made that the doors are often locked, making access to needed resources difficult. This meeting is hoped to resolve this issue.
Meeting was adjourned with the next meeting set for 5:00 p.m. on February 20, 2024 in the Alger County Building Conference Room.
