125 Years Ago – The Munising Republican – January 14, 1899 Of Local Interest

The bull moose, the mate to which was recently killed in Mackinac county, was recently seen in the vicinity of Eckerman. The animal is reported to be a mammoth one in size. It’s tracks have been measured and found to be 5×8 inches in size. The stranger is evidently keeping on the move and may yet escape the bullets of hunters.

100 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 4, 1924 Sleeper Seeks Couzens’ Seat

“Outlook good” and hat probably will be in ring he tells friends. Other friends advise Ex-Governor to keep out of Senatorial Race. Former Gov. Albert Sleeper is very likely to enter the Republican primaries next summer as a candidate for United States Senator, in opposition to James Couzens. He has been seeking to ascertain what the extent of the sentiment against the Senator is because of the latter’s stand for modifying the Volstead Act to legalize 5 per cent beer for beverage purposes, and also to line up workers for himself.

80 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 14, 1944 Supervisors Object to Revaluation

Charging that the work assessment and equalization Alger county performed by the tax commission in 1943 was improperly and inefficiently done and resulted in gross inequalities and injustices, the Alger County Board of supervisors on Tuesday adopted a resolution of protest and have asked Governor Harry F. Kelly to appoint “an investigator not connected with the Michigan State Tax Commission into Alger county with a view to the ultimate correction of the inequalities and unfairness existing therein.”

50 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 9, 1974 City Starts Moving Into Bank Building After a brief ceremony held on Tuesday afternoon of the week, the directors of the First National Bank of Alger County officially turned over the deed and keys to the bank building at the northwest corner of Munising and Elm avenues to the City of Munising officials. The city is now in the process of moving some supplies and equipment into that portion of the building which the First National Bank had operated from for a long number of years until recently moving into its modern new bank facilities across the street.

25 Years Ago – The Grand Marais Gazette – January 7, 1999 Local Writer Publishes Book on the WEB A new book by Rose Marshall, Grand Marais, has been published on the World Wide Web through an International online library called 1st-Books. It is written under the pen name Melissa Rose Marshall and titled “Russia: Between Sword and Cross.”

10 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 29, 2014 No Serious Injuries in Munising School Bus Collision

No serious injuries were reported after a school bus carrying members of the Munising girls’ basketball teams collided with a semi tractor-trailer. The accident occurred on the evening of Thursday, January 23, on U.S. 2/41 near Escanaba while en route to Carney-Nadeau. According to the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gladstone Post, one girl sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
