The second annual fishing derby will take place on Saturday March 2 from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. The derby is run by South Shore Fishing Association, a 501(c)(3) organization and last year raised $15,000 to benefit Rescue 21.
Rescue 21, is an Alger county rescue organization with specially trained individuals to handle situations which range from helping individuals trapped on ice, dealing with snowmobile crashes, and even tracking down missing persons. With members representing a variety of skills, they’ve been part of numerous rescues in the area over the years.
The money received through this fishing derby will help the volunteers of Rescue 21 to purchase much needed protective gear and equipment.
While the derby has already netted several corporate sponsorships, most of whom were sponsors for last year’s derby, more sponsors are still needed. Please contact the South Shore Fishing Association at 906-235-1847 or SSFABoard906@gmail. com if you’d like to take part in this capacity.
Rescue 21 is named after a fallen hero Paul Grahovac, who died in 2001 helping with a vehicle extraction at the scene of an accident. His call number was “Alger 21.” Recently, the group has expanded to include 12 more volunteers from Burt township.
Registration for the fishing derby will begin the day before and the morning of the derby.
