125 Years Ago – The Munising Republican – January 28, 1899

With Terrific Force – Boiler in the H. M. Loud’s Sons’ Lumber Co. Mill exploded Thursday Night. Nightwatchman killed. Leg and arm blown off and nearly every bone in his body broken.

Thursday night at 10:20 the boiler in H. M. Loud’s Sons’ Lumber Co mill exploded with terrific force, instantly killing Daniel McFarlane, the nightwatchman, and entirely demolishing the engine room. A horse, which the nightwatchman used to draw slabs, was standing outside the engine room and was not injured.

100 Years Ago – The Munising News – February 1, 1924

Items of the Town – Anniversary of Fire Next Sunday February 3, is the first anniversary of the Superior street fire in which several business blocks were wiped out and one life was lost.

80 Years Ago – The Munising News – January 27, 1949

Polio Fund Campaign Ends this Weekend.

Alger county’s 1949 March of Dimes will wind-up Saturday night with a benefit dance scheduled to cap a two-week campaign for contributions to help finance a “war” on infantile paralysis. Munising’s annual “polio ball” will be held at the Sylvan Inn, with music played by Bill Bauman’s orchestra.

50 Years Ago – Grand Marais Pilot – January 30, 1974

Funds Committed for Development Project in Alger Lake Superior Research and Development Institute has announced that state and federal funds totaling $772,700 have been committed to an Alger County development project which the Institute, base in Munising, is directed by Paul Juday, a retired businessman who said, “the project…centers around development of a 40-acre industrial park intended as a magnet to attract light industry to the economically depressed area.”

25 Years Ago – The Grand Marais Gazette – January 20, 1999 Starting this weekend, Snowmobile racing is back in Alger County It has been a long time, but thanks to the Alger County Racing Association, the Christmas Motor Sports Track will be presenting snowmobile racing at its finest this coming weekend.

10 Years Ago – The Munising News – February 5, 2014 Perfect Weather for Michigan Ice Fest Although many residents are tired of the recent very cold temperatures which have included low temperatures of -16 and highs of about 16, ice climbers found the weather to be perfect for the Ice Fest, according to Ice Fest Organizer Bill Thompson. “the greatest thing that happened this year was the weather…It has some of the best ice in decades, so climbers were able to go out to Grand Island all weekend long and climb some of the spectacular routes out there.”
