Portland, OR January 27, 2024 Munising Bay Shipwreck Tours is pleased to announce that its founder and president, Peter Lindquist, has been honored with the Roger Murphy National Marine Safety Award from the Passenger Vessel Association (PVA).
The ceremony, attended by maritime industry leaders and professionals as well as Coast Guard officials, took place at the 2024 PVA Annual MariTrends Convention at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. The keynote speaker at the awards session was originally Admiral Linda Fagan of the United States Coast Guard, but due to schedule conflicts Rear Admiral Wayne Arguin Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy U.S. Coast Guard spoke instead.
The Roger Murphy National Marine Safety Award is bestowed by the PVA to deserving recipients for demonstrating, enhancing or contributing to the overall safety of their company or organization and the passenger vessel industry. The award is a testament to Peter’s curiosity, tenacity, knowledge of FCC regulations, knowledge of electronics, knowledge of airway frequencies, and maritime inspections. The award recognizes Peter’s “dogged determination to eliminate unnecessary regulations“ says PVA chair of the Safety and Security committee Chris Meyer.
As Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy, RADM Arguin is responsible for the development of national policy, standards, and programs promoting marine safety, security, and environmental stewardship. “I am honored to have had the opportunity to meet and speak with Rear Admiral Arguin”, says Lindquist. “It would have been extra special to have met Admiral Fagan because I have always been an advocate of women in the military and in the maritime industry. Shipwreck Tours has had female captains for over 20 years, and often the captain and crew on trips are all female” says award recipient Peter Lindquist. Admiral Linda Fagan is the first woman in US history to lead a military service.
Peter is appreciative of the Passenger Vessel Association and the Coast Guard for hearing his feedback, investigating the situation, and acting upon his input to get the Great Lakes Agreement (GLA) changed. The GLA is a bi-national agreement between the United States and Canada. It was established in 1954 at which time marine radios were unpredictable due to their varying frequencies. Modern radios are solid state and have every stable frequencies which nullifies the need for the annual inspections. “Peter Lauridsen, Alan Bernsten, Ed Welch, Eric Christensen, and numerous other PVA members involved are the real honorees here. They did all of the work, all I did was persistently point out the issue,” says Peter Lindquist.
