Munising Mail Carriers Retire:

Munising, MI – Two familiar faces in the Munising postal service, Lori Stewart and Carl Sanford, bid farewell to their long and commendable careers with a retirement party at the Barge Inn on Saturday, February 17. The Beacon caught up with them during the celebration to capture their reflections on their decades of service.

“It’s been a long time. It’s been a great career. We both enjoyed our jobs.” the pair remarked.

With 30 years in the postal service, Lori Stewart began her journey just 10 days before her 30th birthday. “It was a great birthday present,” she chuckled. Lori has weathered through significant events like the Unabomber incident, Anthrax scares, and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“But I’ve only been bitten twice!” Lori exclaimed with a smile, reminiscing about delivering mail to notable figures like Clint Eastwood and 49ers Coach Bill Walsh in California. One of her cherished memories includes receiving tickets to a 49ers football game “in the 90s, back when they were good!”

On the other hand, Carl Sanford, with 15 years of service, shared his fair share of snowy adventures. “I’ve been pulled out of snow banks by half the people in here tonight,” he said, reflecting on the camaraderie among the community.

Both Lori and Carl have worked at various Post Offices across the Upper Peninsula, ensuring mail deliveries reach their destinations. Carl’s postal journey included stops in Escanaba, Gladstone, Wells, Marquette, Munising, and Kingsford. Meanwhile, Lori’s career took her to Escanaba, Manistique, Gladstone, Newberry, Marquette, Negaunee, Munising, and even Post Offices in California.

Expressing gratitude, The Beacon acknowledges the tireless efforts of postal workers like Lori and Carl, who brave all weather conditions to ensure mail delivery. Undeterred by tourists or icy roads, they continue to serve the community diligently.

When asked if they had any advice for Munising, Lori responded, “Give the newbies a chance. Be patient.”

As Munising bids farewell to these postal legends, their dedication and service will be remembered fondly by the community they served so faithfully.

Looking ahead, both Lori and Carl plan to spend two months in Florida, enjoying the warmer weather before returning to Alger County to volunteer at the American Legion in Munising.
