Farms for Folks Expands Reach in 2024, Bringing Fresh Food to Alger County Neighbors

Farms for Folks (FFF) is proud to announce its continued commitment to providing fresh, locally sourced food to Alger County residents through its expanded program in 2024. Since its inception in 2020, Farms for Folks has been dedicated to addressing food accessibility issues in the community, and this year, the program is set to serve even more households.

In response to the growing demand for high-quality, locally grown food, Farms for Folks is increasing its number of deliveries to 48 households in 2024, doubling its impact from previous years. Recognizing the varying needs of participants, deliveries will now be staggered, with 24 households receiving fresh produce every other week over a 12-week period, ensuring a consistent supply of nutritious food throughout the summer months.

The success of Farms for Folks relies on the collaboration of multiple stakeholders:

The Community: Farms for Folks is funded entirely by donations from community members and businesses. The program has experienced steady growth each year thanks to the generous support of donors.

The Farmers: Participating farms supply a variety of fresh produce, including vegetables, bread, pork, honey, eggs, chicken, and mushrooms. Farmers are paid market price for their products, supporting local agriculture and economic development.

The Volunteers: Dedicated volunteers play a crucial role in the success of Farms for Folks, ensuring reliable delivery of food to participating households and fostering connections within the community.

The Families: Alger County residents are encouraged to sign up for Farms for Folks during the enrollment period from April 1st to April 30th. Participants will receive six bags of produce and farm products over the 12-week program, along with information and recipes corresponding to bag contents. Farms for Folks operates on a system of dignity, respect, and trust, with no income or eligibility requirements for participation.

To support its expanded program in 2024, Farms for Folks has set a fundraising goal of $12,000. Donations will go directly towards compensating farmers for their contributions, providing gas stipends for volunteers, and covering essential supplies.
