Burn Wood and Save Coal Look the situation squarely in the face; These are war times and our country is short of coal— 50,000,000 tons short. We mined 50,000,000 extra tons last year— but it was all used in manufacturing ammunition and war supplies and in firing battleships and transports. We are still short of coal. The railroads can’t possibly haul as much as we need. And we are facing another shortage next winter.

83 years ago – The Munising News – May 23rd, 1941.

Aged Man Found Dead in Cabin William Maki, said by neighbors to be about 85 years of age, was found dead yesterday by Elmer Vanska, a neighbor, in his cabin at slapneck, two miles north of M-28. The body was on the floor of the cabin which he occupied alone.

District Court Report Fines for traffic violations, other than speeding, were: John M. Knaus; Traunikk, failure to maintain equipment, $15 John R. Kelly, Grand Marais, driving too fast for condition, $25; Jerry R. Hill, Munising.

32 years ago – The Munising News – May 20th, 1992.

All Night “Grad Party” The closed door affair to celebrate graduation this year is in the final planning stages. The all-night party sponsored by the Alger County Youth Committee will be held at the American Legion on May 30, 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

This year the committee sent out surveys to all the students asking the types of food, games and entertainment they preferred.

Carlson Enters no Contest Plea, is Sentenced An Alger County Deputy was sentenced to probation after entering a plea of no-contest to charges of assault and battery.

Deputy William J. Carlson was charged with the 93-day misdemeanor following an incident at the jail on December 21 that resulted in the beating of an inmate, former Munising chiropractor Dr. George Young. Young was serving a sentence for an assault and battery conviction of his own at the time of the incident, and while serving that sentence, was also charged with several counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct against various female patients in his clinic.
