John 15:13 – There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for a friend.
Memorial Day is an occasion of grief, reflecting on the tragic loss of life and recounting their courageous military service.
Today, we are grateful for the selflessness and sacrifice made by our nation’s fallen.
Duty, Loyalty and Courage – these are just a few of the American values our fallen heroes lived and died for. We are called to carry forward the legacy of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and commit to building strong resilient communities that don’t forget its past.
Army Sgt. Eliu A. Miersandoval, San Clemente, CA Sgt. Mier was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division in Fort Hood, TX. I met Sgt. Mier’s wife Amanda and their son Adrian at a local park. We both had rambunctious two year old little boys and instantly our friendship clicked and we grew as battle buddies.
Sgt. Mier, was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was nine months into a 12 month deployment when his vehicle was hit by an IED during a convoy operation in Kirkuk, Iraq. On January 31, 2004 Sgt. Mier along with two other soldiers, were killed in the same incident.
I sat with Sgt. Mier’s wife Amanda and their son Adrian hours after notification. We sat in the playroom while little Adrian played as three year olds do, oblivious to the depth of grief. We both sat in shock with little words shared. What do you say when faced with the loss of so much. Sorry seems too little for the price that was just paid. The saying Freedom isn’t free had an extra sting that day as I watched my friend grieve the loss of her husband. It truly isn’t free.
Harry S. Truman said “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude.”
As we honor these heroes and their families, let us also extend our gratitude to the Soldiers, Airmen, and families who continue to serve.”
God Bless America & God Bless our US military.
