136 years ago – The Alger County Republican – July 7, 1888 What a Contrast! Mr. Editor: I have noticed that a large number of the people of Indiana are very much pleased that Gen. Harrison has been nominated for the presidency, and that his time is very largely taken up in hand-shaking, and receiving the congratulations of his well-wishing neighbors; and I have been watching the papers to see when the people of Buffalo turned out to congratulate Mr. Cleveland, and shake hands in token of old time friendship. But I cannot find that any of them have called and I am left to wonder, “why?”

99 years ago – Munising News – July 10, 1925 Becomes Violent on South Shore Train W.P. Kennedy, a retired conductor, caused considerable excitement on the westbound South Shore train Wednesday evening between Seney and Shingleton. He seemed to have become suddenly demented and he kept the crew and a number of passengers busy preventing him from leaving every time it stopped. Several times he attempted to get off while the train was in motion.

74 years ago – The Munising News July 6, 1950

Only One Fight, For Sheriff, on Fall Ballot Candidates for Alger County officials draw a bead Monday on September 12, Primary election day, as the deadline passed for filling of nominating petitions. At that zero hour there appeared to be only one contest for the Primary balloting— for the democratic nomination for sheriff. George Dougherty and Evered Lezotte are the two seeking their party’s place on the general election ballot.

Here’s the lineup of candidates who will appear on the Primary ballot: Sheriff— George Dougherty, Evered Lezotte, Democrats; Arthur Moote, Republican.

Clerk – Register of Deeds— John P. Carr, Democrat.

Treasurer— Virginia Alexander, Democrat.

Prosecutor— Richard E. O’Brien, Democrat.

Surveyor— Edwin Swan, Democrat.

Coroners— Joseph Lambert, Vernon Stuht, Democrats; Clarence Beaulleu, Republican.

33 years ago- Munising News – July 10, 1991 Private Landfill Hearing July 23 A public hearing on a revised plan for a privately operated landfill in Munising Township has been Scheduled for Tuesday, July 23rd, at 7 p.m., the Alger County Board of Commissioners were advised at their meeting Monday night. The hearing will be conducted at the Munising Township hall in Wetmore.

It was noted that Mike Hendricksen has submitted a revised plan for a Wood Island Waste Management Facility on property adjacent to Lake States Wood Preserving in Munising Township for DNR consideration.

The initial plan for a landfill operation he submitted was rejected with strong protests being heard from owners of property nearby.

Former Munising Woodenware employees Lyle Rushford (left) and Jim LaMont came out to the Alger County Historical Society building on Washington Street, during the community-inclusive construction of a permanent, memorial woodenware bowl structure. The men were able to meet artist Brock Rumohr, whose grandmother, Lillian Revord, also worked at the factory.
