Veterans golf outing event held at Pictured Rocks Golf Course

The fifth annual Alger County Veterans Golf Outing was held once again, on Saturday, at Pictured Rocks Golf Course. The event managed to attract 160 players and 40 teams. The goal of was to raise funds for four area veteran non-profit groups; the American Legion, the Marine Corps League, Veteran of Foreign Wars and the Vietnam Veterans of America.

“We had a fun day, the weather kind of didn’t want to cooperate, but at least we got in,” committee chairman Arland Brock said. “A good time was had by all.”

A flag ceremony kicked off the event. Of the 40 teams, there were 21 men’s teams and 19 co-ed teams, and they played 18 holes in a scramble- style format. The winner in the men’s division was Graves, LaFlemme, Prunick and Fisher. The co-ed winners were Dale and Bette Immel and Curt and Amy Heribacka.

Brock added that other committee members were Toni Denman, Bruce Kallio, Tom Boyak and Duane Lincoln. Tracy and Mike Prunick were also influential in helping run the tournament.

“The community supports the tournament, they go all out for it and we have a lot of sponsors,” Brock said.

All raised funds will be split between the four veteran groups; something that Brock adds is much needed to support local veterans.

“There are 835 veterans on the rolls in Alger County, which is just a shade over 10-percent of the population,” Brock said. “They don’t have too many ways of generating funds, especially since COVID hit, so we thought we would put this committee together and we will try and do something to keep these places afloat.”
