Tips to reduce mailbox damage

An unfortunate reality in snow country is that mailboxes are occasionally damaged when public works crews clear the roads in winter.

The plowing of snow can push snow against or in front of mailboxes, limiting access and possibly causing damage.

The City of Munising reminds residents that it is the responsibility of the owner to ensure the mailbox is firmly supported so it will be able to withstand snow being plowed.

Residents may wish to add a temporary snow protection frame or screen during the winter months. They are reminded to check their mailbox and support often, clearing snow from it and depositing the snow properly to maintain proper sight distances.

Homeowners may also choose to relocate the mailbox if it has been damaged in the past.
