Bobcats cruise over Grand Marais

Three players scored in double figures for the Munising Baptist boys basketball team last Friday. The Bobcats displayed some steady defense, too, and were able to earn a road win at Grand Marais, 7541, in Northern Lights League action.

“It was a good experience game against a young Grand Marais squad,” Munising Baptist head coach Paul Johns said. “All nine healthy players were able to get at least a half of playing time. We were able to race out to a 35-10 halftime lead, thanks to pressure and transition baskets. Grand Marais showed great improvement the second half, and it was good to have pushback that forced us to earn everything we got.”

Dylan Swift poured in 16 points in the first quarter, and the Bobcats led 20-5 after one. In the second, Gabe Heyrman netted six points, and five other players hit field goals as well. The Polar Bears got a 3-pointer from Ethan Brauer, all to make it a 35-10 lead at the break for Munising Baptist.

Heyrman scored four more points in the third, but the Polar Bears got six points in the frame from Gabe Lawrence, and Brauer hit another 3-pointer and had five points. The Bobcats still led comfortably entering the fourth, though, 52-25.

Swift scored four more points in the fourth as he finished with 24 on the night. Jonny MacArthur scored 13, and Heyrman finished with a career-high 12. Also for the Bobcats, Ethan Swift scored eight points; Will Norton and Steve Norton both netted six; Ian Cross added four; and Remy South Olson chipped in with two.

As for the Polar Bears, Brauer sank four 3s in the game as part of his 18 points. Lawrence and Nathan Irvine had eight points apiece; Daniel Irvine netted five; and William Capogrossa added two.

Munising Baptist is scheduled to play at Paradise tonight and at Ojibwe Charter on Saturday. The Bobcats then host two games early next week, welcoming Beaver Island on Monday and Paradise on Tuesday.

Grand Marais heads to Mackinac Island tonight and Saturday and will play at Big Bay de Noc on Monday. They are scheduled to make a trip to play Beaver Island on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
