Some nights just don’t seem to go your way. That appeared to be the case for the Superior Central boys basketball team on Jan. 15, when it dropped a home game to Newberry, 50-27.
“It was a disappointing night for us all around,” head coach Adam Ely said. “We didn’t feel good about the way we competed or played, and it’s tough to have those nights at home.”
The Cougars managed only one field goal each by Zander Bigger and Blake Tanner in the first quarter, and they faced a 16-4 deficit after one.
In the second, Bigger knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. He also split two free-throw attempts, giving the Cougars all seven of their points in the quarter. The Indians kept their offensive attack going strong, though, and led 2911 at the half.
Superior Central’s third quarter was highlighted by Andrew Charlebois hitting a 3 and scoring five points, though the Cougars were still well behind after three, 39-20.
The Cougars were paced by Bigger, who finished with 12 points. Charlebois and Drew Begovac had five points apiece; Ryder Kroupa hit a 3-pointer in the fourth to account for his points; and Tanner netted two.
SC also lost a road game to Stephenson on Monday, 51-29.
“We liked the way we competed, and we were able to hang around until late,” Ely said. “That’s a good team, and it’s hard to grind a game out with our limitations.”
Bigger led the team in scoring, though official stats were unavailable for this contest.
SC (3-8 overall) had a home game scheduled against Carney- Nadeau on Tuesday; heads to Rapid River tonight; and is off until next Friday, when they play at Rock Mid-Peninsula.
