On the afternoon of Jan. 17, Craig Michael Smith was apprehended in Limestone Township of Alger County for multiple warrants issued by the 93rd District Court and the 11th Circuit Court.
Smith, who was out on bond for the charge of Possession with Intent to Deliver Methamphetamine and a parolee from the Michigan Department of Corrections, failed to comply with bond conditions in early December and was ultimately issued several new warrants as a result.
On the morning of Jan. 17, officers from the Alger County Sheriff’s Office received information that could possibly lead to Smith’s location.
After an investigation, officers were directed to a residence in the Limestone area. Upon arrival, officers learned that Smith might have been warned of their approach and fled into a wooded area adjacent to the residence. The Alger County K-9 unit tracked Smith for nearly 1.5 miles and assisted officers with apprehending him.
In the process of the investigation and search, evidence was discovered that might lead to additional charges against Smith. The investigation is ongoing.
The operation and investigation were conducted by the Alger County Sheriff’s Office (including Alger, one of the K-9 unit’s dogs), the Michigan State Police and the U.S. Forest Service.
The sheriff’s office notes that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law.
