NEWS BRIEFS

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians began reopening its Kewadin Casino locations this week following a cyber attack earlier this month.

The first reopening was scheduled to take place at noon on Wednesday at Kewadin Casino Sault Ste. Marie. It will be followed by Kewadin Casino St. Ignace at noon today, Feb. 28.

The Manistique, Christmas and Hessel locations are all scheduled to reopen at noon next Monday, March 3. All casino hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues will resume normal business hours.

The cyber incident, which began Feb. 9, affected the tribe’s businesses, government and health services. Kewadin Casinos temporarily shut down operations to mitigate damage and worked with cybersecurity experts to restore and enhance its systems.

“We’re fortunate to be able to reopen Kewadin’s doors and continue serving as a prime entertainment destination for the eastern U.P.,” Sault Tribe Chairman Austin Lowes said.

The scheduled Tesla concert at Kewadin Casino Sault Ste. Marie tonight will proceed as planned. Visit kewadin.com for more information.

Marquette doctor and wife charged with child abuse

A Marquette-area physician who previously practiced in Munising was arrested along with his wife last week for allegedly abusing their 10-yearold son.

Dr. Colin Irish, 57, and Carrie Irish, 49, were charged with second-degree child abuse, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The arrests came after Marquette County sheriff’s deputies responded to a Marquette Township residence following allegations of child abuse reported by Child Protective Services.

Police say the couple’s 10-year-old son, who has special needs, was locked in an unheated closet at the residence, where he slept on a linoleum floor wearing only his underwear, and without a blanket, pillow or mattress.

The abuse allegedly took place over several months.

Colin Irish posted a $25,000 cash bond, and Carrie Irish posted 10% of $25,000. Their preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 13 in Marquette’s 96th District Court.
