Two campers found dead at Isle Royale
Two campers were found dead earlier this month at a remote site in Isle Royale National Park. Park rangers were alerted to the situation June 8 and hiked nearly 11 miles overnight to South Lake Desor Campground, where they confirmed both fatalities early the next morning.
Because of the campground’s remote location, recovery efforts required helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.
The victims have been identified, and their families have been notified. The causes of death remain under investigation, though authorities say there is no indication of foul play or ongoing public safety threat. The National Park Service is leading the investigation with assistance from the FBI.
These mark the third and fourth recorded deaths in the park since 2007. Previous fatalities included a scuba diving incident in 2013 and a medical emergency during a 2019 hike.
Produce coupons offered to kids at farmers market
Kids in Alger County can pick up free produce coupons at the next Munising Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market, thanks to leftover funding from the Power of Produce program.
The coupons are valid for fresh fruits, vegetables and mushrooms from market vendors and are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
Families can pick up coupons by stopping at the market manager’s booth during market hours.
The next market will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, June 16, at Bayshore Park, 355 Elm Ave., Munising.
In addition to the produce coupons, the Munising School Public Library is partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to distribute free grab-and-go lunches through the Gather 2 Grow program.
Lunches are available Monday through Friday from noon to 1 p.m. for youth 18 and under, as well as disabled adults up to age 26. Youth must pick up the lunches in person at the library.
Both programs aim to support healthy families and promote access to fresh, nutritious food throughout the community.
