PETER “DUD” JOHN HEYRMAN, JR.

Munising – Peter “Dud” John Heyrman, Jr., 46, of Munising passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at UP Health System in Marquette, Mich. with loved ones around him.

Pete was born in Munising to Peter and Judy (DesArmo) Heyrman on February 21, 1976. A Munising resident his whole life, Dud attended Munising Public Schools and graduated from Munising High School in 1995. Peter suffered from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, but it did not slow him down. In high school, Dud was a member of the track and football team, helping in any way he could and becoming an integral part of the teams’ spirit and success. Pete was dedicated to the team. He would drive his wheelchair through rain or snow for a couple of miles to get to pregame practice.

Dud was also involved with the high school concert and marching bands, defying the odds and playing snare drum better than most in the percussion section. After graduation, he attended Northern Michigan University. In his spare time, Peter had a passion for learning all he could about world history and became a bona fide war historian. He enjoyed listening to music and attending concerts (and befriending some of his musical heroes along the way), and most every Saturday night could be found listening to Elmer Aho’s American Country Gold radio show. Pete was opinionated and wasn’t afraid to tell you what he thought. Since 2016, Dud spent most of his time organizing and raising funds for The Pete Heyrman Award Scholarship. This annual scholarship, created and maintained by Peter, is awarded to two deserving Munising High School student athletes that possess the characteristics Peter was known for; Courage, Tenacity, Character, Spirit, Loyalty, and Perseverance.

Pete’s dedication to this scholarship was unwavering, even in the face of physical limitations, and the community has always come out to support and rally around this passion project of Peter’s. Dud is survived by his loving and devoted parents Peter and Judy Heyrman; his brother – Brad (Jessica) Heyrman of Sault Ste. Marie; his sister – Michelle (Donnie St. John) Heyrman of Manistique; his nephew – Nathan Heyrman; his niece – Natalie Heyrman; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Visiting time with family and friends will be at Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Sunday, February 5, 2023, from 3 until 6 p.m. Memorials are requested to be made to the Pete Heyrman Award Scholarship Fund, N7237 Indiantown Road, Munising, MI 49862.
