New Book: The Third Pole: Mystery, Obsession and Death on Mount Everest by Mark Synnott. A hundred-year mystery lured the author, a veteran climber, into an unlikely expedition up Mount Everest during the spring 2019 season. What he found was a mystery. On June 8, 1924, George Mallory and Sandy Irvine set out to stand on the roof of the world, where no one had stood before. They were last seen eight hundred feet shy of Everest’s summit still “going strong” for the top. Could they have succeeded decades before Sir Edmund Hillary? Irvine is believed to have carried a Kodak camera with him to record their attempt, but it, along with his body, had never been found. Did the frozen film in that camera have a photograph of Mallory and Irvine on the summit before they disappeared into the clouds, never to be seen again? Kodak says the film might still be viable.
New Book: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. Follow a motley crew on an exciting journey through space – Rosemary Harper doesn’t expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the faroff corners of the galaxy, and most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman who learned early to keep to herself, she’s never met anyone remotely like the ship’s diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks, who keep the ship running, and Ashby, their noble captain.
Life is about to get extremely dangerous when the crew is offered the job of a lifetime. But risking her life wasn’t part of the plan. In the far reaches of deep space, the tiny crew will confront a host of unexpected mishaps and thrilling adventures that force them to depend on each other. Winner of the Hugo Award.
