The Michigan High School Esports League (MHSEL) is extending an exciting opportunity to Munising High School students by offering free Esports league memberships for the first time this year. This marks an expansion of the program, which has already seen two successful years of participation by Munising Middle School students. The initiative aims to engage student athletes in competitive and curricular environments, helping them build critical skill sets, explore career paths, and contribute to their school’s culture through varsity Esports.
The league offers a wide range of popular game titles, including Rocket League, Super Smash Bros., Madden NFL, and chess, among others. Students can compete in two seasons each year: Fall, running from September through December, and Spring, from February through May.
Nicole Lasak
Nicole Lasak, a key coordinator for the program, expressed her enthusiasm for expanding the opportunity to high school students, saying, “The Michigan High School Esports League is newly offering free membership into both their middle and high school leagues. We have offered middle school esports for two years and would love to grow and expand this program into the high school. Coaches would be trained through MHSEL and would mentor students in games like Rocket League, Super Smash Bros., Madden, chess, and more on school computer systems.”
In addition to the free memberships, MHSEL offers a range of resources for participants, including in-person and virtual tournaments, strategy sessions, and training for new coaches. The program has grown significantly, with the Spring 2024 season seeing over 164 schools and 700 teams engaged, making it the largest season yet.
Growing Trend
Munising schools are keen to see local students take advantage of this growing trend in Esports, providing them with opportunities to develop not only gaming skills but also teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking. This is an exciting opportunity to Munising High School students by offering free Esports league memberships.
