National Junior Honor Society welcomes 15 new members

The Munising chapter of the National Junior Honor Society welcomed 15 new members on March 3.

The induction ceremony was organized and run by its current members. President Addie Bowerman welcomed members, inductees, family members and school staff in the Munising School Public Library for the official ceremony. She, along with adviser Heather Nayback, celebrated the various accomplishments throughout the past year.

Members Spenser Murk, Khloe Kortman, Brynnlee Meyer, Keira Curtis and Zoey Grabowski lit symbolic candles as part of the ceremony. Murk’s candle symbolized growth, Kortman’s symbolized unselfish courage to serve, Curtis’ symbolized wisdom, Meyer’s symbolized leadership and Grabowski’s symbolized citizenship.

Numerous parents and guardians also attended.

Secretary Bailey St. Amour read off the list of new inductees while historian Kenadie Perron ensured the signing of the official roster.

New inductees from Grades 7 and 8 will be expected to fulfill a minimum of four hours of service connected with the school system before the end of the school year.

Students in National Junior Honor Society help Mather Elementary with various events such as March Reading Month; assist as managers for various sports teams; help with track meets in the spring; work with the Booster Club; assist with the high school NHS induction; and have many other volunteer options.

Perron will also create the yearbook page for the group, and St. Amour takes monthly meeting notes while Bowerman runs the meetings.

Mrs. Nayback chooses Members of the Month who accomplish service hours early, who serve well beyond the minimum hours or for those members who have been extra active.

Among the new inductees, 14 are in Grade 7 and one is in Grade 8. Each applicant was required to write a short essay that detailed examples of their strong character in school, how they helped their community and how they were trying to become a leader.

To be eligible for induction, students had to possess a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25, and they must maintain this average to remain members.

In addition, applicants had to have the support of Munising Middle/High School staff members, who voted on the inductees.

Munising’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society has been chartered for three years.
