The Negaunee Miners will have U.P. Power behind them as they travel to Ford Field and face the Grand Rapids West Catholic Falcons for the MHSAA Division 6 championship today. Game starts at 4:30 p.m. and is available on Bally Sports Network (formerly known as Fox Sports Detroit).
Negaunee is undefeated after winning the West Pac conference and running through some of the bigger schools in the Upper Peninsula. The Miners defeated Houghton, Menominee and Gladstone in the playoffs before defeating Reed City 13-12 in the snow last week. Defense is key for Negaunee, who have held their opponents to just 87 points in 13 games with five shutouts.
The Miners are led by Paul Jacobson, who is a Detroit Lions High School Football Coach of the Year candidate. Voting is still open for that award on the Detroit Lions website until Saturday at 11:59 p.m.. North Central’s Leo Gorzinski is also nominated.
The Falcons are a private school with one loss on the season, a week 7 loss to Fruitport by a 28-20 score. They defeated Clinton last week 33-14 in the state semifinal last week and have blown out Vatervilet, Constantine and Lansing Catholic Central in earlier rounds of the playoff. They have outscored their opponents 488-156 this season.
The Miners were the only team to make it to Ford Field for the 11-man state title game. The other potential Upper Peninsula school was Iron Mountain, who lost 41-14 to downstate Ubly last week in Division 8.
