Cougars win Orange Out game against Mid Pen

The Superior Central Cougars took a strong opening run and stretched it into a victory against rival Mid Peninsula on Tuesday, Jan. 31 in Eben Junction. It was the first time this year that the Cougars boys team lead a contest from first points to end of the game.

“We’re happy with the win,”SC Head Coach Adam Ely said. “We had three games where we were in a position to win and we gave it away, so learning to win a game like this is good.”

Good speed early from the Cougars established a quick lead for the home team. SC used drives to the rim early in the contest to disrupt the Wolverines, forcing Mid Pen to tap into their bench earlier than usual.

According to Mid Pen Head Coach Mark Branstrom, early fouls were a major factor in the game.

“We were outmanned a little bit once we got into foul trouble,” he said. “We need to keep our players on the floor.”

As the game continued, Superior Central was able to win the rebounding matchup on both the offensive and defensive sides of the glass to keep control of the contest.

Trent Rutter led all scorers with 18 points. Mike Englund led for Mid Pen with 10.

SC (4-9) will play Big Bay de Noc (8-5) as part of a winter homecoming doubleheader on Friday night.
