The all-U.P. awards have also been released for the 2022-23 girls basketball season by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Four Alger County players were named to various teams across the region.
The highest ranking was Munising sophomore Bailey Corcoran who was named to the Division 4 second team. She had 13.1 points per game, 9.5 rebounds per game, and averaged at least one steal, block and assist per contest.
Superior Central’s Maddie Begovac was named special mention while Mustangs Monique Brisson and Emmy Crisp were named honorable mention.
The top award of Miss U.P. Basketball goes to Isabella Hebert of Hancock. The senior Bulldog nearly averaged a double-double with 18.6 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. She also led her team to the Division 3 title.
All-U.P. teams are divided between the Dream Team of the top 5 players in the region, then remaining players are divided into first, second, special mention (two or more votes for second team, but not enough to be named to second team) and honorable mention. Due to amount of schools, there is a class for MHSAA Divisions 1-3 and Division 4.
The UPSSA consists of 25 members of the sports media in the Upper Peninsula from television, radio and newspapers, providing weekly polls for football, basketball and volleyball starting in the 2023 season. The Munising Beacon became a voting member at the fall 2022 meeting and is the first voting member from Alger County in UPSSA history.
