North Dickinson cancels 2023 football season

The varsity football season for the North Dickinson Nordics is canceled, according to school officials. The team failed to get enough numbers to play in the Great Lakes 8 West division this year. The school does not have a lot of male athletes in the upper classes, but was able to start a baseball team for the first time last season thanks to a large amount of incoming freshman that played as eighth graders, so the school is hopeful to return to the gridiron in 2024.

Gladstone 10U loses in state semis

The Gladstone 10U Little League softball team lost surprisingly in the Michigan semifinals last week. The team had won its first four games through the mercy rule before losing 8-2 to downstate Hudsonville in the final four.

Norway wins U.P. Legion Baseball title

The Norway Vikings American Legion baseball team defeated the Escanaba Cubs 6-3 to win the Zone 5 American Legion baseball title in Marquette on July 22. This is the first year of the Norway Legion team.

Rudyard announces new track

The Rudyard Bulldogs will be able to host a home track meet again after renovations to the school’s athletic facilities. The school hasn’t hosted a home track meet in over 20 years, but has posted interest in doing so this spring. They are the first school to make major improvements to its track in the Eastern U.P. in over a decade.

Rapid River hires new basketball coach

Holly Frisk has been hired as the new Rapid River girls basketball coach, according to the school district’s Facebook page. Frisk is an alumna of the school and will try to turn around the Rockets program. The team hasn’t won a game since the opening round of the 2021 district tournament and finished 0-20 the last two years.
