SC at Newberry, again

The game between the Superior Central Cougars at the Newberry Indians is back on the schedule. Originally, the Cougars were going to Mid Pen to play tonight after Newberry was unable to secure an officiating crew. Further social media posts confused what school was to be held at blame for the scheduling change as SC was unable to travel on Thursday or Saturday. Newberry was able to get an official MHSAA crew for Friday, so the game reverted to the approved Great Lakes Eight East schedule.

Eagles outlast Polar Bears

Ojibwe Charter scored three goals in the first eight minutes against the Grand Marais Polar Bears on Thur. Sept. 14 in Grand Marais, but barely held onto a 5-4 victory. Ethan Bell scored all four for the Polar Bears, including a penalty kick with five minutes to go in the contest.

Pickford downs Rudyard in 2OT

The Pickford Panthers came back from a 22-8 deficit to defeat the Rudyard Bulldogs in double overtime 44-42. The game solidified the Panthers as the Great Lakes East Eight leader and was the first double overtime game of the season in the Upper Peninsula.

SC approves new scoreboards

The gymnasium at Superior Central will get a new set of scoreboards after the school’s board of education approved the purchase on Monday, Sept. 18. The scoreboards were one of the last major improvements, which had already updated the floor, bleacher system and installed new banners on the north side of the gym.

Sanders statue unveiled

The Detroit Lions have erected a new bronze statue of Hallof- Fame running back Barry Sanders, which now sits outside Ford Field. It was unveiled as part of Detroit’s home opener against the Seattle Seahawks, who spoiled the moment by beating the Lions 37-31 in overtime.
