The Munising Mustangs girls tennis program had a tough go of things at the GNC tennis championships in Marquette, finishing last of the seven teams at the competition.
“It was tough sledding for us at GNCs as we were the smallest school there,” said Munising Coach Rich Prunick, Jr. “Everyone put up solid competition for the toughest conference field in the U.P., so I think we represented Stang Nation well.”
Munising’s lone point came from Callie Britton in the No. 4 singles flight. Britton upset her opponent from Gladstone in the 3-6 matchup of the bracket 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals, but lost to seventh-seeded West Iron County 6-5, 6-2. Britton lost the third-place match to Marquette to take away one point.
Other Mustangs were unable to make it out of the first round in any of the remaining brackets, facing the eventual champion in the opening round of three of the seven other flights. Escanaba won the conference championship, winning six of the eight flights. Marquette was second and Gladstone and West Iron County tied for third.
Most of the teams in the GNC play in the MHSAA U.P. Division 1 championship. Only Munising and West Iron County will compete in the Division 2 championship, against teams like Gwinn, Norway and Iron Mountain. The U.P. Finals were held earlier this week, but after deadline of the Munising Beacon.
