It was a tough game for the Mustangs, as the St. Ignace Saints marched into town and stole away a homecoming victory 58-22 on Friday, Oct. 13.
The Saints offense led by quarterback Ethan McLean was able to score on every one of their offensive possessions in the first half to jump out to a 30-8 lead at the break. Big passes to Jonathan Ingalls and touchdown tosses to Owen Lester kept the fourth-ranked eight man team in the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association (UPSSA) poll driving. Moving the ball through St. Ignace also stood tall defensively, winning the turnover battle with three interceptions and a fumble recovery on the night.
Munising saw positives by rotating Blake Walther into the backfield and putting Carson Kienitz in at quarterback. Two long drives used the option and sweeps to get the ball to the outside for more success, opening up play action passes. Down at the St. Ignace one-yard line, Kienitz found Jack Dusseault for a touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter. The other long drive ended in a red zone fumble on an option pitch.
In the second half, Dussault also scored a second touchdown in the third quarter on a 38-yardpass from Kienitz after tipping the ball to himself to avoid the Saint defenders. With both Dusseault and Kienitz being juniors, that passing connection should be strong next year as well.
Munising (2-6) will end their season against Alger County rivals Superior Central (0-8) on Sat. Oct. 21. Kickoff will be at noon in Eben Junction.
