Maplewood wins NLL title

The Northern Lights League volleyball tournament took place at Hannahville on Saturday, October 21st. The day started at 9 a.m. with Munising Baptist taking on Ojibwe Charter and Hannahville vs. Paradise. Ojibwe Charter and Hannahville took the wins advancing them to the next round. Up next, Ojibwe Charter and Hannaville had no time to waste, quickly moving right into back to back games. Ojibwe Charter could not secure their second match of the day vs. Big Bay de Noc and lost in three, allowing the Black Bears to advance. Hannahville, taking on Beaver Island, put up a valiant fight but ultimately lost to Beaver Island, allowing the islanders to advance to the semi-finals.

The gym transformed into one full court layout for the semi-final matches where the number 2 seed, Mackinac Island took the court for the first time playing Big Bay de Noc. This back and forth battle went well past the allotted time with close sets, but the Lakers secured their spot in the final game beating Big Bay de Noc after a tiring four-set battle.

The number 1 seed Maplewood took on Beaver Island following the Big Bay/Mackinac Game. Maplewood beat the islanders making the final championship game Mackinac Island vs. Maplewood.

In the final match, Maplewood and Mackinac were neck in neck at many instances. However, the Lakers fell short and Maplewood took the win, becoming the NLL Volleyball Champions with the Mackinac Island Lakers as runner- up. Maplewood was also the regular season champions with Mackinac right behind them as well.
