Conklin wins MS XC title

Emma Conklin, a sixth grader at Munising Middle/ High School, won the U.P. Middle School cross country championships at Gladstone’s Farmhouse B and B course on Friday, Oct. 20. The Mustang girls took third place in the race as a team with six runners finishing in the top 40.

Ice in at Alger Centennial

The ice is ready to go in Alger Centennial arena in Munising, with open skate now available from 3-5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with a family skate from 5-7 p.m. on Fridays. 10U, 12U and 14U teams also started this past week with the 6U and 8U teams starting on Nov. 2.

Prep football postseason begins Fifteen teams across seven divisions will compete in the MHSAA football playoffs, beginning tonight. Marquette hosts Petoskey and Gladstone hosts Boyne City in the games closest to Alger County, while Munising and Superior Central opponents Rudyard, Pickford, Newberry, St. Ignace, North Central and Forest Park will compete in the eight-man bracket.

U.P. ping pong tournament Saturday

The U.P. Open Invitational, a ping pong tournament, will be held at Marquette Mountain on Saturday. Set as a fundraiser for Start the Cycle, the 32-team tournament still has space open for those signing up, as of deadline of this week’s edition. Register at bit.ly/ UPInvitational_23

Bay XC at regionals Saturday Munising alumna Hattie Cota will lead Bay College at the NJCCA Division 2 regionals this weekend. While the Norse is not expected to advance to nationals, Cota is on the bubble and may advance individually.

Yooper umps NLCS Marquette’s Adam Hamari was the home plate umpire in game seven of the National League Championship Series between the Arizona Diamondback and Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, Oct. 24. Hamari has umpired for multiple seasons with the MLB and is the first Upper Peninsula native to umpire at such a high level.
