Freshmen Jesse Burg and Dillon Raab both went undefeated in their classes to lead the Lakeland University men’s wrestling team as it hosted the Muskie Scramble to open its season Saturday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
Burg and Raab both went 4-0 on the day as a revamped Muskies team under head coach Mike DeRoehn in his second year back as coach performed well. Six wrestlers won at least two matches and 11 Lakeland competitors in all won at least one match in the scramble format that featured wrestlers competing from eight schools.
Burg was champion of the 133-pound B division, winning his first three matches by fall, including a pin of Christopher Khaosanga of Concordia University Wisconsin in 2 minutes, 3 seconds in his third match. He then outlasted Greco Renden of Harper (Ill.) College for a 9-5 decision to complete the run through his class.
Raab won all four of his matches in the 149A class, including two wins by fall to start. He then edged Connor Nagela of Milwaukee School of Engineering for a 16-14 decision in the first-place match.
Diego Morales won twice in the 285B division and competed in the first place match, where he was defeated by Mason Kochersperger of Carthage College via 8-3 decision. Bryan Romero also won twice in the 197B class, including a pin of Vinny Patierno of Southwestern Michigan College and a 17-5 major decision over Giovanni Rodriguez of Morton (Ill.) College.
Reagan Bowerman also won twice in the 149B division with a pair of pins. Lucas Schanen also added two wins in the 141B class, including defeating Kyle Stampfly of Southwestern Michigan by an 18-13 decision in the fifth-place match.
Lakeland competes next at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 8 Man Battles next Saturday starting at 9 a.m. in Eau Claire.
